Built for Customization and Precision
Originally opened in 1966 by Weyerhaeuser and later acquired by Northwest Hardwoods in 2014, the Elkhart, IN facility spans approximately 8.5 acres, has an annual production capacity of 90,000 m3/8, and is purpose-built for custom panel component manufacturing. Unlike NWH’s traditional sawmills or concentration yards, Elkhart focuses on producing hundreds of unique, made-to-order panel parts tailored to exact customer specifications.
With advanced machining capabilities—including panel processing, panel saws, beveling, notching, and CNC routing—the site delivers precision-cut components designed to move seamlessly into customers’ operations. Its CNC capabilities allow for tight tolerances, repeatable accuracy, and efficient processing of full sheets, helping reduce downstream labor and complexity.
The facility supports a wide range of panel products, including Meranti, Birch, Radiata Pine, several composites, and some specialty cores. Several Alder lumber grades are also available, with room for additional hardwood species to better supply their customers. This flexibility allows the Elkhart team to serve diverse markets with consistent, high-quality products.
A Hub for Value-Added Services
What sets Elkhart apart is its ability to go beyond panels. The team focuses on delivering complete solutions—cutting, machining, and packaging components so they arrive ready for immediate use. From custom packaging and mixed-product shipments to flexible freight options and dependable lead times, the operation is designed around customer needs.
This service-driven approach reflects a clear differentiator:
“Our exceptional service to our customers is clearly what sets us apart. We always go the extra mile to take care of our customers.” Says Jeremy Umbaugh, Site Manager.
A Culture Built on Teamwork
The Elkhart facility employs 23 team members with an average tenure of just over six years. The site is powered by a collaborative, team-first culture that drives both productivity, quality, and safety. The team’s focus on safety has put them at over 3,100 days without a lost time incident.
Site Manager Jeremy Umbaugh leads with a straightforward philosophy:
“A happy team is a productive team. Everyone needs to get along and work together. I believe in transparency—no secrets, no surprises—just honesty so we can all succeed.”
Jeremy’s own career path reflects the opportunities available within NWH. After starting as an Office Specialist, he was promoted to Inside Sales, then Site Superintendent, and now Site Manager—demonstrating the company’s commitment to internal growth and development.
Production Supervisor Brad Balasa, who joined NWH in 2021, brings more than a decade of leadership experience and has focused on building a strong, team-oriented environment within the facility. By emphasizing teamwork and communication, he has helped reduce turnover and strengthen the overall experience level of the team.
“It’s a work environment you actually look forward to coming to,” Brad says.
Experience That Makes the Difference
The site’s longest-tenured employee, Corey Hull, has spent 18 years at NWH working across multiple roles—from Saw Operator to Forklift Operator to Warehouse Manager. His perspective reflects the values that define the Elkhart team:
“I’ve always gotten back what I’ve put into NWH. Give 100% and get 100%.”
Corey also values the fast-paced nature of the operation and the people he’s worked alongside over the years—both of which contribute to a workplace built on mutual respect and shared accountability.
Rooted in a Unique Community
Elkhart is widely known as the RV Capital of the World, but it’s also the Band Instrument Capital of the World. Charles Gerard Conn began the musical instrument industry in Elkhart by producing the first rubber mouthpiece in 1874. That led to further innovations, including promoting school band programs and one of the first musical instrument research labs. According to the Indiana Historical Bureau, about 40% of worldwide band instruments were made in Elkhart by the 1970’s.
This makes Elkhart a fitting home for a facility centered on precision manufacturing and craftsmanship. The region’s strong industrial base and skilled workforce support the site’s ability to deliver high-quality, custom components.

Looking Ahead
With a strong focus on precision manufacturing, customer service, and team collaboration, the Elkhart facility continues to play a vital role in NWH’s value-add strategy. By delivering ready-to-use precision components and flexible solutions, NWH helps customers build faster, reduce waste, and improve overall efficiency.
As demand grows for customized, production-ready components, Elkhart is well-positioned to expand—combining advanced capabilities with a team committed to doing whatever it takes to get the job done right.
