The Outlook is Cautious. The Opportunity is Real.

IWF Atlanta 2026 brought manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and other industry leaders to Atlanta, GA, August 25–28, offering a firsthand look at what’s shaping the woodworking and hardwood markets.

NWH’s booth was the perfect place for connecting with customers and tracking what’s changing across the hardwood landscape. And while the market remains measured, there were plenty of encouraging signs.

Customers, manufacturers and distributors are actively looking for opportunities to compete and grow. Quality continues to matter. Distributors are looking for new products and ways to sell more hardwood, while evolving design trends are creating new possibilities for real wood.

Tariffs, global events, and the broader economy are still creating uncertainty. But the takeaway from IWF was clear: the market is cautious, but it’s moving.

IWF 2026

What Stood Out

Quality still carries weight.

Price matters. But conversations at IWF reinforced that it isn’t the only consideration. Customers continue to recognize the value of consistent, high-quality lumber and the difference it can make in their operations and finished products.

Real wood is finding new momentum.

Natural and stained wood are gaining traction in the design community, while earth tones are becoming more prominent, as seen in recently announced 2027 Colors of the Year. Together, these trends create a favorable environment for the warmth, character, and authenticity of real hardwood.

What to Watch

Distributors are looking to grow hardwood sales.

Many distributors report that their businesses are performing well and are actively looking for new and differentiated products to bring to customers.

There’s also an opportunity to build greater knowledge and confidence among sales teams, helping them better understand hardwood and ultimately sell more of it.

Alder continues to open doors.

Interest in Alder remains strong, driven by its versatility across a wide range of aesthetics. From natural and lighter finishes to stained and more contemporary applications, customers continue to see opportunities to do more with the species.

New approaches to sourcing are emerging.

Customers continue to explore ways to remain competitive, including alternative manufacturing and sourcing models. Sorted-to-width options are increasingly becoming the new standard.

What's Shifting

The market is still planning carefully.

Tariff uncertainty, particularly around Canada, continues to make near-term planning difficult. Global events and broader economic uncertainty are adding to the caution.
Still, the conversations at IWF weren’t about standing still. Customers continue to look for opportunities, invest in their businesses, and identify products and approaches that can help them compete.

Exporters see a path forward on EUDR.

Exporters expressed strong confidence that the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), working with AHA, is providing a path to satisfy European Union Deforestation Regulation requirements, an important development for companies selling hardwood products into Europe as regulations evolve.

The hardwood story matters more.

One of the clearest opportunities coming out of IWF may go beyond any individual species or application.

There is still a significant need to communicate the broader value of hardwood: its ability to store carbon, support rural communities, provide a renewable forest resource, and contribute to healthy, sustainable forests.

It’s a compelling story, and one the industry has an opportunity to tell better.

The Bottom Line

The market remains measured, but there are reasons for optimism.

Manufacturers still value quality and want to grow. Natural wood aesthetics are gaining momentum. And new applications, sourcing approaches, and opportunities continue to emerge across the hardwood market.

Uncertainty may be shaping the market. It isn’t defining it.
